An established course by the 18th century it was for many years the headquarters of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, predating their move to Muirfield. The home of first Open champion Willie Park (1860), the deadliest match-player of his day, it was an Open venue between 1874-1889.

Today the original nine-hole course is enclosed by a horse racing track but is still open for public play. Plans have been made to restore the old links' faded dignity.
The etching depicts the cavernous 'Pandy' (Pandemonium) bunker - 5ft deep, 30 yards wide, 15 yards long. The call 'Play two more' was perhaps optimistic in an era before sand irons.
